VISION
To break the cycle of ill health, poverty and hunger within the communities we support in Kenya.
MISSION
Together in unity we move forward to support our partners in Kenya as they take ownership of their destiny for better health and sustainable social development. Through the inherent kinship ties and the spirit of volunteerism as the basic mechanisms, we are in pursuit of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s). These focus on the big five, namely; agriculture, basic health, education, water and sanitation as well as infrastructure (power, transport and telecommunication).
We are confident that the resulting network will create working synergy and long term partnerships powerful enough to break the cycle of ill health, poverty and hunger. Through innovative and appropriate technologies, approached with a can-do attitude, we firmly believe that evidenced knowledge will forever shape attitude and practice. We operate as an effective, democratic, transparent and accountable entity driven to deliver common good.
Our commitment is motivated by Jesus Christ’ call to serve those in need.
Guiding Principles
Piye Inc operates under six guiding principles:
- Transparency & Accountability: Our motto is to work only with community groups that are transparent and accountable in their activities. Piye is also committed to being transparent in its activities and accountable to its members.
- Community-owned & Community-driven: We believe that solutions are only sustainable when they are community-owned and community-driven. We allow the community’s voice to be a driving force in the development of programs. In most cases, communities show their commitment to partnership through the donation of land, resources or labour.
- Partnership: We believe that through partnership we not only create a sense of belonging within the global village but also a sense of shared vision.
- Equity: We support groups that can ensure resources will benefit the community at large.
- Capacity Building: We focus on utilising local resources and local capacity to address needs, and, through collaboration and education, we aim to increase capacity within our partners.
- Sustainability: Our programs are designed so that we are not simply offering hand-outs. We ensure that after a defined period, the community is self-sustaining and Piye can embark on supporting other communities.
An interesting quote from Dr. S. Bezruchka of the University of Washington, USA.
“If you give me a fish, you have fed me for a day. If you teach me to fish, then you have fed me until the shoreline is contaminated or seized up for development. But if you teach me to ORGANISE, I can join together with my peers and fashion our own solution.”
