BACKGROUND

Piye Incorporated is a registered charity organisation founded in Sydney, Australia in 2006. We are a team of Kenyans, Australians and New Zealanders who work alongside local community groups in Kenya. Piye began as an impetus to address health and community development in rural Kenya. Its name is drawn from the first Black Kushite Egyptian Pharaoh who ruled Egypt approximately 2020 B.C, from the city of Nepata in Nubia, Sudan. The founders of Piye Incorporated travelled to Egypt in 2005 to learn about the Egyptian Pharaoh and to draw inspiration from the ancient city of Kom Ombo, located north of Aswan”.

Many African communities are in a viscous cycle of ill health, poverty and hunger. However, we are certain that through the setting up of viable structures that are community-based, community-supported and community-run, this cycle can be broken.

Piye will work alongside Kenyan communities in need of support and whilst being mindful of cultural nuances, we will address grassroots health and development issues. We have adopted the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s) as our key guiding factors. Community collaboration forms a major part of our project planning and implementation process. We are passionate about empowering communities to address their felt and normative needs. We support communities that have taken development and health issues into their own hands, are keen to be the key driving force in all projects and are interested in building local capacity for future project sustainability.

Piye recognizes and salutes the efforts of the NGO’s working in African communities, particularly those in Kenya. We acknowledge gaps in service provision due to the high levels of need. Piye aims to operate within communities and/or target populations not previously served by other NGO’s or where there is extreme need.

The founders and board members of Piye Incorporated bring a wealth of knowledge in management, general medicine, psychiatry and mental health, community development, public health, information systems, education and health sciences research. Most importantly, we share the pain of those who have been deprived of basics human needs.

OUR AIMS

Piye aims to create an environment for communities to achieve their full potential. Our approach will involve the following:

  1. To collaborate with communities in need of support, co-facilitate community discussions, conduct needs assessments and develop culturally appropriate programs to address needs.
  2. To seek the support of individuals, organizations and agencies to support Piye’s initiatives.
  3. To conduct baseline surveys as appropriate e.g. population statistics and dynamics, household surveys, water and sanitation surveys, cough and fever surveys, immunization coverage surveys within identified communities.
  4. To identify, research and link communities with organisations that support community initiatives, for example those that provide micro-financing for income generating activities (IGA’s).
